Experience the Freedom Trail

the paul revere house

Included among them are eyeglasses, several pieces of furniture and a handsome, brass-headed walking stick. It became a boarding house, saloon, bank, vegetable stand and cigar rolling operation over its long life. In 1901, a fire in the basement threatened the house, and it was in danger of being torn down in 1907 when it was rescued. The land around the North End was filled and it was no longer near the water. As waves of Irish, Jewish and Italian residents moved into the North End, the house adapted. Sons of Liberty John Hancock and Samuel Adams were staying in Lexington.

After this, the ethnic make-up of the North End shifted to Eastern European Jewish and Italian immigrants. The house functioned as a tenement building and housed various shops on the first floor in the last part of the 1800s and early 1900s. In 1902, the house was acquired by a Revere descendant and, in 1907, the Paul Revere Memorial Association was formed. The house was restored to its 17th-century exterior appearance and opened as a museum in 1908. As this trend of property owners moving out of the neighborhood continued, the character of the area changed. It became more run-down and was home to boarders and renters who came and went frequently.

But he did stop at numerous houses on the way to Lexington, and patriot soldiers sprang to life. After narrowly avoiding capture just outside of Charlestown, Revere changed his planned route and rode through Medford, where he alarmed Isaac Hall, the captain of the local militia, informing him of the British movements. Revere then stopped by his own house to pick up his boots and overcoat, and proceeded the short distance to Boston’s North End waterfront. Slipping past the British warship HMS Somerset in the darkness, Revere landed safely.

Telling the Full Story

No trip to Boston would be complete without visiting the home of the famous patriot, craftsman, businessman and entrepreneur Paul Revere. In the new education and visitor center, enjoy displays of silver and evocative artifacts related to Revere’s many business ventures, and learn the real story of his midnight ride presented in his own words. View the Paul Revere House event schedule and plan a trip to experience special living history programs in the site's courtyard and period gardens. After Revere sold the house, it became a tenement with its ground floor remodeled for use as shops, including at various times a candy store, cigar factory, bank and vegetable and fruit business. In 1902, Revere's great-grandson, John P. Reynolds Jr. purchased the building to prevent demolition, and restoration took place under the guidance of architect and historic preservationist Joseph Everett Chandler.

It was thought they would then continue on to the town of Concord, to capture or destroy military stores — gunpowder, ammunition, and several cannon — that had been stockpiled there. In fact, the British troops had no orders to arrest anyone — Dr. Warren’s intelligence on this point was faulty — but they were very much on a major mission out of Boston. The Paul Revere House provides various programming, such as field trips, school outreach programs, lectures, tours, and more. The adjacent Pierce/Hichborn House, once owned by boatbuilder Nathaniel Hichborn, Paul Revere’s first cousin, is open for guided tours. In April 1908, the house was opened to the public, and the association continues to oversee its upkeep and day-to-day operations. The restored dwelling resembles the late 17th-century original—nearly 90 percent of the structure, including two doors, three window frames, and portions of the flooring, foundation, inner wall material, and rafters, are original.

The second series of excavations took place in the basement of 5-6 Lathrop Place, which used to be the backyard of the Revere family. These were conducted in response to a plan to rehabilitate the building for use as a visitor center. Phase I occurred in 2010 and located intact 18th-century deposits, prompting a second phase of investigation. They found that the construction of Lathrop Place capped deposits ranging in date from the 17th through 19th centuries. According to Warren, these troops planned to arrest Samuel Adams and John Hancock, two leaders of the Sons of Liberty, who were staying at a house in Lexington.

The simple Craftsman style house at 1271 West 35th Street helps tell the important story of architect Paul Revere Williams and should be preserved so that we tell his full story and understand the challenges he overcame. Two years later, the house was purchased by preservation-minded owners who plan to fully rehabilitate the residence and honor the Williams family legacy. Through the Conservancy’s direct advocacy, the house is now a designated Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM), which acknowledges Williams’ time here and offers protection.

Historic Charm Meets Bespoke Modern Design in This $5.6 Million English Country Manor

His portrait was made a part of the National Portrait Gallery’s collection during the late 1940s, while he was named L.A. Two years later, Williams’s Lilien Residence was featured in the pages of Architectural Digest. And hopefully, thanks to USC and the Getty Research Institute’s efforts, the publication of his historic works is only set to continue. Williams and his family lived in the now-landmarked Jefferson Park home for three decades. In 1951, 14 years after he penned “I Am a Negro,” Williams and his family moved from West 35th Street to a home of his own design in a L.A.

Paul Revere's Ride

During a declared local or national health crisis, we follow all applicable CDC and local guidance related to social distancing, building capacity restriction, masking, and cleaning when required. This may include requiring or encouraging the use of masks particularly since our spaces are small and may be crowded; adhering to capacity restrictions that may increase wait times, and providing hand sanitizer stations. Williams not only became an architect, but a strikingly prolific one at that. After opening his own firm in 1922, he went on to create more than 3,000 designs over the course of a career that lasted a little over half a century.

Political rallies, debates, concerts, and natruralization ceremonies are just some of the events which regularly take place here. Before he died, Barron Hilton pledged 97 percent of his considerable wealth—estimated at $4.5 billion—to the Hilton family foundation and earmarked it for humanitarian work. Perhaps the most impressive of the home’s 32 rooms is also one of its smallest. The 200-square-foot, dark-wood-paneled study with its hexagonal window acted as the home office for two great business titans, CBS’s Jay Paley and Barron Hilton. “Every time I drive up to the house, it takes me right back to my childhood, the memories of Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas parties,” says 31-year-old Barron N. Hilton, whose sister is socialite Paris Hilton. Part of the home’s considerable appeal is that it was designed in 1936 by Paul Revere Williams, a pioneering Black architect who designed homes for Hollywood elite such as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Stanwyck, Lucille Ball and Tyrone Power.

On December 11, 1906, John Phillips Reynolds Jr. sold the Revere House to several trustees, who in turn on May 1, 1907, sold the house to the Paul Revere Memorial Association. On May 4, 1907 the Paul Revere Memorial Association was officially incorporated as a non-profit association dedicated to the preservation of the house and the memory of Paul Revere. Still, it wasn’t until December of 1902 that Revere descendant John Phillips Reynolds Jr. (Paul Revere’s great-grandson) purchased the property. Reynolds bought the building for $12,000 from Sidney Squires, delaying plans to tear it down and replace it with a tenement apartment. The Paul Revere Memorial Association was founded to restore and operate the Paul Revere House. The house, sold by Paul Revere in 1800, served as a boarding house, shops and businesses, and tenement apartments for the following century.

Paul Revere purchased the home in 1770, moving his family here from their Clark’s Wharf residence. The former merchant’s dwelling proved ideal for Revere’s growing family, which in 1770 included his wife Sarah, five children, and his mother Deborah. On the evening of April 18, 1775, Dr. Joseph Warren summoned Paul Revere, then employed by the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Massachusetts Committee of Safety as an express rider carrying news, messages, and documents. The task—to ride to Lexington, Mass., to alert Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were marching to arrest them—immortalized the talented silversmith and his midnight ride.

The back bedroom was undoubtedly a crowded room, though fortunately not all 16 ever tried to occupy the house simultaneously. To make the most of available floor space, the house contains a bed that is something like a murphy bed. The mattress section of the bed is hinged so it can be pulled upright to make more floor space. The property houses a number of artifacts that were possessions of Revere himself.

Listen my children and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere…

The park also works and cooperates with many different partner organizations which comprise the Freedom Trail. He initially lived there with his first wife Sarah, five of their children and his mother. At 90 years old, the house was no longer a luxury property, and Revere made additions and improvements, over the time he owned it, including adding a kitchen.

The neighborhood served as a home and workplace for many skilled artisans, tradesman, and merchants. By the mid-1700s the house was a modest dwelling compared to the large mansions of Boston's elite. Nonetheless, it was a perfect home for an aspiring middling family. Early preservationists raised money to purchase and preserve the home as a historic site. Pauline Revere Thayer, a great-granddaughter of Paul Revere, and cousin of John Phillips Reynolds, Jr., was also a key figure in the early years of the Association and the restoration of the house. She lost her father, Paul Joseph Revere and her uncle Edward H.R. Revere in the Civil War.

For current hours of operation and to learn more about The Paul Revere House's programs, exhibits, and tours, visit the The Paul Revere House website. On April 18, 1775, Revere set out in the dark from his North Boston home by horse with William Dawes to reach Adams and Hancock. The two riders met Adams and Hancock in Lexington and enabled the revolutionaries to avoid arrest. The young Revere was educated in reading and writing in school before completing his training as an apprentice to his silversmith father. But he left the business briefly and enlisted in a provincial army in 1756 during the French and Indian War. The iconic artisan Paul Revere and his home embody the cultural heritage and historical memory of Boston.

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

He reworked a Henry Pelham drawing in an engraving and widely distributed prints of the stark image of armed British troops taking aim at the colonists. The growing unrest boiled over on March 5, 1770, when British troops and a crowd of colonists faced off on Boston’s King Street near the Customs house. The tense standoff ended in the Boston Massacre, as the British used their bayonet rifles to shoot and kill five unarmed colonists. The Paul Revere house serves as the oldest residential building, still standing, in downtown Boston. Revere House tours are self-guided, complemented by illustrated text panels and museum interpreters. If you would like to download the text panels for reading off-site, click here.

A half hour to an hour will be enough to see all the basics of the house. Revere, himself, was a renaissance man who worked as a silversmith and coppersmith. He was one of the most knowledgeable metalworkers in the colonies at the height of his profession. Revere next stopped at his home to collect his boots and overcoat before friends rowed him across the Charles River to Charlestown.

And, with that, the first home owned by a pioneering Black architect who helped to shaped L.A.’s modern cityscape was designated as a Historic-Cultural Monument. Those covenants did not exist in Jefferson Park, and, as a result, a sizable Black community thrived there. The Bunker Hill Monument is a major commemorative obelisk, memorializing a key battle during the outset of the Revolutionary War.

The period furnishings in the upstairs chambers belonged to the Revere family. In the courtyard is a 900-pound bell crafted by Paul Revere & Sons. The Paul Revere House is fully accessible for individuals who use wheelchairs or are mobility impaired. The house is accessible on the first floor via the courtyard ramps. The second floor is accessed by taking the elevator in the visitor center and then connecting to the house via the walkway.

A parsonage that was home to the Mather family stood on the site of the Paul Revere House until it was destroyed by the great fire of 1676. A new house was built to replace it in 1680 for Robert Howard, a wealthy merchant who located there most likely to be near the waterfront wharves. Is to inspire a deeper appreciation for the relevance of American history by sharing the life, legacy, craftsmanship, and iconic home of artisan, businessman, patriot, and citizen Paul Revere. On the night of April 18, 1775, silversmith Paul Revere left his small wooden home in Boston’s North End and set out on a journey that ultimately made him a legend. Today that home is still standing at 19 North Square and has become a national historic landmark. It is downtown Boston’s oldest building and one of the few remaining 17th-century dwellings in a large urban area in the United States.

Revere’s wife, Sarah, died in 1773 and he married his second wife, Rachel, later that same year. However, they may not have lived there for most or all of the 1780s, during which time the house was rented out to several people. They remained there until Revere sold the house in 1800 to a trader named John Hunting and purchased a large brick house on Charter Street that he had been renting.

These hills, overlooking Boston's harbor and waterfront from the south, were the site of fortifications built at night by the Continental Army in March, 1776. Artillery mounted here hastened General Howe's decision to take his troops away from Boston, which in turn ended the siege of Boston, gave General Washington his first victory, and inspired the Patriot cause. Only yards away from "Old Ironsides," the museum offers hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. Tour the church where Paul Revere arranged for two lanterns to be hung from the steeple on April 18, 1775 to signal patriots in Charlestown that British troops were heading to Lexington and Concord by way of the Charles River.

'House of the Dragon' Season 2: HBO Drops Two New Trailers Entertainment Tonight

house of the dragon season 2 trailer

Season 2 promises even more dragon warfare, as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower’s forces go head to head — well, dragon to dragon. The trailer shows Daemon Targaryen suiting up in his impressive armor, knights on horseback, soldiers burning alive and several of the main cast riding their dragons into battle. "There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin — and no war so bloody as a war between dragons." So warns Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) in the first-look trailer for House of the Dragon season 2, which returns to HBO next summer. In equally important fashion, showrunner Ryan Condal told The Hollywood Reporter last year that viewers will "meet five new dragons" this season. Season 2 returning cast includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham.

The sneak peek brings us to the depressing aftermath of the pivotal season 1 finale, which saw the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen's child, the young and gentle Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), during a dragonback skirmish in the skies with Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell). The new footage from the fiery Game of Thrones prequel series surprised fans gathered in Brazil for the CCXP convention on Saturday. HBO beefed up the reveal by confirming a batch of actors who will play notable book characters from George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood.

HBO has released two trailers for Season 2 of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff series that wrapped its first season way back in October 2022, with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen — fire in her eyes — making a decision to fight for the Iron Throne. Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” takes place around 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” (and about 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen), during the height of the Targaryen dynasty. Season 1 recaptured the political turmoil that “Game of Thrones” was known for, following Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) being named the chosen heir of King Viserys I (Patty Considine). Rhaenyra and Daemon become embroiled in a power struggle against Rhaenyra’s half-brother King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), leading Westeros to the brink of civil war. “House of the Dragon” is heating back up, as HBO has released a trailer for the second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel series. HBO revealed a first look at the sophomore season of its hit 'Game of Thrones' prequel and announced six new castmembers.

"The war will be fought, many will die, and the victor will eventually ascend the throne," says Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) and Corlys aka the Sea Snake (Steve Toussaint) will also be back. The teasers come just one day after the network unveiled a collection of character art teasing the tagline "All Must Choose." In the shots, each of the key players in the Targaryens' battle for the Iron Throne gazes ominously toward each other. The Green trailer begins with Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) reiterating her belief that her late husband, King Viserys, had wished for their son -- the now-King Aegon II (Glynn-Carney) -- to succeed him. Season 1 of House of the Dragon picked up eight Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series (winning for its costumes) as it set up the story of House Targaryen almost 200 years before the events of GoT. House of the Dragon is a prequel to the Game of Thrones series and takes place nearly 200 years before the events of the 2011 show.

New faces joining the series include Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer, Tom Bennett as Ulf and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. Other newcomers are Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower and Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong. The cast also includes Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Phoebe Campbell, Bethany Antonia, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. The trailers also tease a return to Winterfell, the snowy home of the Starks that is ruled over by Cregan Stark in the prequel. The Game of Thrones prequel is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel, Fire & Blood, which is a history book recounting notable events in Westeros in the 200 years before the original series. One trailer focuses on Rhaenrya, Prince Daemon and their forces on Dragonstone, and the other is centered on the King’s Landing team of Alicent, her father Otto and her children King Aegon and Prince Aemond. Taking place 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” will officially mark the start of the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war.

The network also announced that season 2 will kick off on June 16, nearly two years after the first season aired. Viewers, of course, understand that Alicent's point of view stems from a tragic misunderstanding of what Viserys mumbled on his death bed in the first season. The new major players include Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” aired from Aug. 21 to Oct. 23, 2022. The fantasy drama series is based on author George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” which details the history of House Targaryen. Season 1 followed Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in her fight to be named the chosen heir of King Viserys I (Patty Considine) and the lead-up to the war of succession between the Targaryens. House of the Dragon Season 2 is a spin-off series in the popular Game of Thrones franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Serving as a prequel to the 2011 show, House of The Dragon draws inspiration from Martin’s 2018 book named Fire & Blood. Following the immense success of season one, its successor is set to drop later this year, with the majority of the cast returning to occupy their roles.

The trailer effectively serves as an announcement of war that is set to commence in the upcoming season.

In the wake of the Season 1 finale, in which Aemond murders Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys and his dragon, war is imminent in Westeros. The blacks and the greens are both gathering their forces, dragons and new allies to face off in a bloody, fiery battle to the death. In King’s Landing, young King Aegon is doubling down on his claim to the Iron Throne, which his half-sister Rhaenyra views as her rightful inheritance from their late father.

"He held to his decision up until death and yet Alicent's son sits my throne. I  mean to fight this war and win it." As House of the Dragon gears up for its long-awaited second season, two fiery new trailers for the HBO series dropped on Thursday. In early November, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that Season 2 of the fantasy drama series would premiere in “early summer” 2024. House of the Dragon debuted its first season in 2021 to strong ratings and critical acclaim.

In the end, Schumer was able to cut a deal that would allow critics to receive floor votes on their amendments in exchange for speeding up the process for passage. President Biden on Saturday signed legislation reauthorizing a key U.S. surveillance law after divisions over whether the FBI should be restricted from using the program to search for Americans’ data nearly forced the statute to lapse. Our star system does not denote hotel amenities but it does denote the level of our approval. A place with one star is worth a look—after all, it made the list. A rating of two stars means it's excellent, and three stars is the highest praise we give.

The six amendments ultimately failed to garner the necessary support to be included in the final bill. Gen. Merrick Garland praised the reauthorization and reiterated how “indispensable” the tool is to the Justice Department. The legislation that was approved 60 to 34 with bipartisan support would extend for two years the program known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Frommer's only recommends things we think you will enjoy and that will make your trip both authentic and unforgettable. Our experts personally appraise each choice in terms of their overall enthusiasm for it.

“This reauthorization of Section 702 gives the United States the authority to continue to collect foreign intelligence information about non-U.S. Persons located outside the United States, while at the same time codifying important reforms the Justice Department has adopted to ensure the protection of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties,” Garland said in a statement Saturday. An adorable old-fashioned complex that's just what you need for a fuss-free, affordable stay, the Key Lime lets you choose your own style. You can stay in one of the rooms gathered around the modest swimming pool for a classic motel-style stay or you can pick a self-contained cottage arranged around the acre of well-maintained grounds. In the back of the property, its original estate home, 1854's Robert Maloney House, is where you'll find hotel-style bedrooms away from the admittedly mellow social scene by the pool. Although it's right off Truman Avenue, the grounds are green and the energy isn't impersonal or frenzied—you're far enough from Duval Street (about a 5-minute walk) to find peace, but near enough to find food and drink without struggling with a car.

Enjoy a night of dining and dancing under the stars. One of the major changes detractors had proposed centered on restricting the FBI’s access to information about Americans through the program. Though the surveillance tool targets only non-Americans in other countries, it also collects communications of Americans when they are in contact with those targeted foreigners. Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the chamber, had been pushing a proposal that would require U.S. officials to get a warrant before accessing American communications.

Most of the rooms have either a queen or king bed and are done up in a pleasing but not overly plush Florida style—gentle pastels and Bahama-style shutters to shut out the heat. It's relaxing but not super high-end—the staff is cheerful and it cares, but it also steps back and lets you do your own thing—making it a good choice if the last thing you want is to be caught up in the city's heavy-handed overpriced luxury hotel scene. Happy Hour is Mon - Fri from 4pm-7pm in the bar area. Enjoy the outdoor waterfront dining and TIKI bar. But members on the House and Senate intelligence committees as well as the Justice Department warned that requiring a warrant would severely handicap officials from quickly responding to imminent national security threats. “If the government wants to spy on my private communications or the private communications of any American, they should be required to get approval from a judge, just as our Founding Fathers intended in writing the Constitution,” Durbin said.

The program permits the U.S. government to collect without a warrant the communications of non-Americans located outside the country to gather foreign intelligence. The reauthorization faced a long and bumpy road to final passage Friday after months of clashes between privacy advocates and national security hawks pushed consideration of the legislation to the brink of expiration. Our bar tender was courteous and friendly. The tvs are limited depending on what section is open.

But despite the Biden administration’s urging and classified briefings to senators last week on the crucial role they say the spy program plays in protecting national security, a group of progressive and conservative lawmakers had refused to accept the version of the bill the House sent over earlier. Still, officials had said that court approval shouldn’t be a substitute for congressional authorization, especially since communications companies could cease cooperation with the government if the program is allowed to lapse. The House passed a bill to reauthorize and reform a government surveillance tool without including broad restrictions on the FBI’s use to search for Americans’ data. Before the law was set to expire, U.S. officials were already scrambling after two major U.S. communication providers said they would stop complying with orders through the surveillance program, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations.

The Dobbin House Tavern: 2+ Centuries Of History & Charm

In the 1700s, the American colonies imported 4,000,000 gallons of rum and distilled another 5,000,000 gallons. Four Score and Seven years before the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, (1776), Reverend Alexander Dobbin built a house to begin a new life in America for himself and his family. For our main course I decided on the house special, Prime Rib and my friend ordered the Gettystown Shrimp (jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat).

Some people also believe that the slaves who came to the house never really left. Apparitions of slaves have been spotted throughout the house, including in the hiding places. In addition to providing cool, clean water, the spring served as a refrigerator for perishable foods. Alexander Dobbin built his house over a spring for convenience and also to be assured of water in the event of an Indian attack. Of course, the availability of a water supply was one of the most important aspects of colonial life.

TheDobbin House is closed for January 4th and 5th, 2023 for cleaning, inventory, maintenance and photographing of the 1776 historic buildingand kitchen areas. We were more than satisfied with our experience at The Dobbin House Tavern. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but any expectation I did have was far exceeded.

Plan Your Gettysburg Trip

The Dobbin House is one of the most popular destinations in Gettysburg for visitors who are interested in the town’s history and culture. With its own bakery, the Dobbin House serves up mouth-watering desserts and fresh breads that are irresistible. The Dobbin House serves colonial and continental cuisine, prepared from the finest and freshest ingredients. This beautiful dining room is perfect for special occasions like wedding receptions or a family part. Lots of colonial charm thanks to three fireplaces and a log cabin feel. This is a place where locals celebrate milestones or treat themselves to a night out, and where visitors to Gettysburg flock to experience the unique colonial atmosphere.

Abigail Adams Ballroom

The Dobbin House also rents out the historic 1858 Little Round Top Farm, where Jacob and Tillie Weikert and their four children, Henry, Elizabeth Ann, Amanda, and baby John lived during the Battle of Gettysburg. Guests can also enjoy the building’s gardens and courtyard, which are decorated with historic artifacts and feature a spring-fed pond. And, lastly, the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, and perhaps died in the house when it was used as a field hospital, still haunt the Tavern.

Step back in time to a by-gone era, dine by candlelight and enjoy fine dining. I have been to my share of fine dining restaurants, and The Dobbin House really ranks high on my list as one of the best. In my many visits to Gettysburg I have always passed by the Dobbin House, even gone on a ghost tour there, but never dined. I really had no idea what I was missing, as this is the best dining in town. We had two 10 year old girls with us, and they thoroughly enjoyed this colonial-era experience. Dobbin House Tavern dates back to the 18th Century, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Even the servant’s period clothing is completely authentic, including the tie-on pockets. The house appears virtually the same as it did over 200 years ago. Several of their recipes have been featured in Bon Appetite and Cuisine magazines. Amazingly, the historic house appears virtually the same as it did almost 250 years ago.

Dobbin House Bed and Breakfast

Each meal begins with a bread service, baked fresh daily served with fresh butter. We began our meals with french onion soup, and a crab cake for appetizers. Both were fantastic, being a Marylander I am always cautious about crab cakes outside of Maryland, but the Dobbin House offers a delicious crab cake. You will enjoy an array of delicacies including Colonial and Continental Cuisine, prepared with thefreshest ingredients. After a full day exploring Gettysburg, we had really worked up an appetite.

I love the fact that you can bring children, and they offer a more grown and fancy menu, as our girls stated. Next time you’re up for an extended adventure, follow the ultimate hidden gems in Pennsylvania road trip. In the mid-1800s, a secret crawl space at the house may have been a first stop on the Underground Railroad north of the Mason–Dixon line. During and after the Battle of Gettysburg, the house served as a temporary field hospital. “Four Score and Seven Years” before Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address, the Dobbin House was built. Reverend Alexander Dobbin, an early pioneer who helped settle and civilize the area, erected the original structure in 1776.

Today, it is the oldest standing structure in the town limits of Gettysburg. With the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg approaching, I took a drizzly Thursday trip to the battlefield. My itinerary included a stop at the Historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern, one of Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic homes, for a late lunch.

We are still takingall necessary measures to use best practices in deep cleaning ourlocations as per the protocols set by theCDC, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and local officials. On September 11, 1851, a deputy U.S. marshal led a raid in Christiana to recover four enslaved people in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Free Blacks and freedom seekers in the surrounding area met this raid with a successful but deadly armed resistance. Some historians have called the Christiana Resistance (also known as the Christiana Riot) the first battle of the Civil War.
